當郵差來找我時，我正在海外戰場

郵差遞給了我一封信，我的內心一如往常高興無比，

因為戰爭已經結束並且還贏得了所有勝利。

但在那時我打開了這封信，信件是這樣開始的：

能否請你把我的相片寄回？

典故：

這首歌源自一段真實故事。
女孩的男友因為戰爭服役被分派海外，在時空阻隔下，女孩另結新歡愛上了另一個男孩，而這個女孩的新歡正是這位可憐阿兵哥的兄弟 。
當這位遠在海外戰場上的阿兵哥看到這封信時，女友早已要嫁給別人(自己的兄弟)。
　
因著這個故事，這首歌，使得A dear John letter成為女生向男生提出分手時「分手信」的代名詞
